William Chapman, a former child actor who once appeared alongside an actress known for her role in the Harry Potter films, has died following a fatal encounter with a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster.

The 24-year-old had previously worked in several television productions, including ITV’s comedy drama May Contain Nuts. His death on Saturday, October 10, has prompted an outpouring of grief, while authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A Childhood Spent Pursuing Acting

Chapman began exploring the performing arts at an early age. He attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, where he developed an interest in acting and drama.

One of his notable early appearances came in 2009, when he played Alfie Chaplin in ITV’s two-part comedy drama May Contain Nuts. The production starred Shirley Henderson, widely recognised by audiences for portraying Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter film series, alongside actor Darren Boyd.

The programme centred on the intense competition among parents seeking the best educational opportunities for their children. Henderson played Alice Chaplin, a mother who disguises herself as her young daughter in an attempt to secure a place at a prestigious school.

Chapman later appeared in the BBC series True Stories in 2012, portraying Edward Jenner during his childhood. Jenner subsequently became renowned for his pioneering work in vaccination and his contribution to the development of immunology.

His television credits also included the ITV period drama Breathless, which explored the lives of medical professionals in 1960s Britain.

Although Chapman demonstrated an early enthusiasm for performing, his acting appearances appear to have become less frequent as he grew older.

Chapman died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on the afternoon of October 10.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the park. Police confirmed that he had been visiting the attraction alone.

The incident led to an emergency response and the evacuation of visitors. The wildlife park subsequently closed while the relevant authorities began examining what had happened.

The tiger involved in the attack, an Amur tiger named Altai, was not injured. Park officials confirmed that the animal would not be euthanised following the incident.

Authorities have continued to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy, while police have appealed to members of the public to avoid sharing distressing footage of the attack out of consideration for Chapman’s relatives.

Family Remember a Much-Loved Son

In a statement released through the police, Chapman’s family expressed profound sorrow over his death and described him as a bright, warm and engaging young man who was deeply loved by those closest to him.

The family also disclosed that Chapman had experienced significant mental health difficulties over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.

Their statement offered further context to the tragedy, while emphasising the depth of their loss. They are now facing the difficult task of coming to terms with his sudden death.

The family has also asked the public to respect their privacy and refrain from circulating videos showing the final moments of his life.

Authorities Continue Their Investigation

The fatal incident has raised questions about the circumstances that led Chapman to enter the enclosure and the events immediately preceding the attack.

The local authority has initiated a health and safety investigation, while Yorkshire Wildlife Park has been cooperating with the relevant agencies.

The park, which opened in 2009, is home to a range of wildlife species, including endangered Amur tigers. Its dedicated tiger habitat was designed to allow visitors to observe the animals while maintaining separation between people and dangerous wildlife.

As the investigation proceeds, Chapman’s death is being remembered not only in connection with his early television appearances but also as a devastating loss for his family.

His story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of encounters with powerful wild animals and the importance of maintaining safety barriers and following wildlife park rules.
