Harry has been left ‘shocked’ by his brother’s refusal to budge – as fears ramp up that their royal rift could get even uglier
Prince Harry may have spent the past two months quietly settling back into life in Britain, but behind the scenes, we’re told he’s been making one increasingly desperate attempt to heal the biggest family rift of them all – by getting his brother to sit down with him.
The Sussexes may have enjoyed a low-key country pub lunch last week, but Harry’s return to the UK has hardly been under the radar. From posing alongside the Irish Guards at the Invictus Spirit Awards, complete with giant wolfhound Seamus, to jetting off to Canada and jumping out of a plane, the Prince has certainly kept himself busy.
One person, however, is reportedly refusing to pay any attention whatsoever: Prince William.
Despite Harry now being just a short distance away in the Cotswolds, William, 44, is said to remain completely opposed to a reconciliation with his younger brother. And while that position may have been easier to maintain when Harry, 42, was living more than 5000 miles away in California, we’re told the situation has become much harder to ignore now the Sussexes are firmly back on British soil.
In fact, it’s claimed Harry has gone as far as trying to arrange a secret meeting with William, hoping they can finally discuss their grievances away from the cameras and Palace politics. But so far, we’re told, the answer has been a resounding no.
An insider says, ‘The King has given the orders for this feud to be squashed, but as everyone knows, William is refusing to come to the table. He’s stopped complaining about Harry and Meghan and is now acting like they don’t even exist instead.
‘The courtiers are trying to get them together to talk about doing some sort of tribute to Diana, and Harry is all for it, but William has refused. It’s not just Harry and Meghan that William is disrespecting; he’s openly going against the King’s wishes by continuing to act as though Harry and Meghan are banished when they’re clearly right there at his doorstep.’
The timing could hardly be more significant. With next year marking the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, a joint tribute would provide the brothers with an obvious reason to put their differences aside, even if only temporarily.
King Charles, 77, has reportedly raised ‘no objection’ to a Thanksgiving Service for Diana, which could potentially see both William and Harry speak. If it goes ahead, it would put the brothers together for the first time since the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in 2024.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Sussexes have confirmed they are working on a project to honour Diana, while it has also been reported that Harry reached out to William about potentially doing something together. The pair previously joined forces for the BBC documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy in 2017, marking the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death.
Yet this time, the prospect of a united front appears to be proving much more difficult.
The source says, ‘Harry made no secret of his interest in doing some sort of film or TV series about their mother in honour of the coming anniversary, and it will be a terrible look if it’s done without any input from William. Almost everyone agrees they should be putting on a united front, not least because it’s what the King wants.
‘But William is immovable, to the point where people are feeling like they’re being forced to pick William or Charles’ side, and a lot of people are afraid to make the wrong choice and end up out of a job. That may sound dramatic, but the reality is emotions are running very high. There is a sense, especially with William, that he’s keeping score, and you are either with him or against him. That’s how intense this is for him.’
For Harry, though, it seems the refusal to even sit down and talk has come as something of a shock. Despite the fact that his relationship with William has been fractured for years, we’re told he genuinely believed time would eventually soften his brother’s anger.

And although Harry has faced plenty of criticism over his and Meghan’s interviews, documentary and memoir, the source insists he believes he has repeatedly attempted to extend an olive branch.
‘Harry is genuinely shocked and never thought for a second that his brother would still be this angry. He genuinely believed it would eventually be water under the bridge, so this extreme reaction is something of a shock,’ the insider says.
‘Harry certainly wishes there was something he could do to sort this out, that’s why he’s tried extending so many olive branches. But there’s not even been a shred of forgiveness on William’s part.
‘Harry insists he’s tried to find every possible way to say that he’s sorry, even down to telling William’s aide that he wants a sit-down to apologise, and it hasn’t made a dent in things.’
And while Harry has reportedly been trying to get his brother behind closed doors, William has been perfectly happy to be seen in public with another famous face – Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.
The future King was photographed laughing and chatting with Cruise at the London premiere of Digger last week, a particularly awkward sight given Harry’s long-standing desire to establish himself among Hollywood’s elite. According to the source, the encounter has only added to Harry’s feeling that his brother is deliberately freezing him out.
The real concern, however, is what Harry might do if that frustration continues to build.
Harry is convinced that William is still actively undermining him and Meghan with the media and within Hollywood circles and says he has every right to be angry about that. Harry is known to be pretty impulsive, and the more wound up he gets, the more likely he is to follow through on his threats to make William regret this,’ we’re told.
‘If he’s pushed hard enough, it’s very plausible that Harry could unleash another tell-all delving into his childhood and his relationship with his brother. He’s not coming out saying that, but the possibility is looming, and it’s got a lot of people behind the palace walls pretty uncomfortable.’
For a family already dealing with a potential Diana tribute, Charles’ reported desire for peace and the Sussexes’ increasingly prominent presence in Britain, another round of public allegations would be the last thing the Palace needs.
And despite reports that William would like to see Harry and Meghan eventually return to the US, it seems that strategy could be having precisely the opposite effect.
Harry’s security review could potentially influence where the Sussexes live next, while their popularity in Britain remains a subject of debate. But rather than being pushed towards the exit, we’re told Harry is becoming increasingly determined to make his return permanent.
The source tells us that any attempt to make life uncomfortable enough for the Sussexes to leave could ultimately ‘backfire’ – and he has this four-word warning for William: ‘I won’t be bullied.’
The source says, ‘He won’t be bullied. If William’s aim is to make life so unpleasant that Harry eventually leaves, it’s backfiring badly because, if anything, the more William freezes him out, the more determined Harry becomes to dig in and make this a permanent move.
‘There is no doubt he’s missed England terribly; he loves California, but he’s an Englishman at his core and thrilled to be back. He’s feeling very good about all the work he’s been doing, and he’s still very hopeful that things with the King can continue to improve, so he’s looking at all of that in very positive terms, aside from the situation with William, of course.’
